Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch wird der Begriff Schutzgrad von Anwendern häufig als Synonym für die Schutzklasse oder die Schutzart verwendet. Grundsätzlich geht es bei all diesen Begriffen um die Sicherheit und Widerstandsfähigkeit von elektrischen Betriebsmitteln, Kabeln und Leitungen. Fachlich müssen die Bezeichnungen jedoch klar voneinander getrennt werden.
Während die Schutzklasse definiert, welche Maßnahmen gegen einen lebensgefährlichen elektrischen Schlag getroffen wurden (z. B. durch Schutzerdung oder Schutzisolierung), bezieht sich der Schutzgrad meist auf die sogenannte IP-Schutzart (Ingress Protection). Diese gibt an, wie gut ein Produkt gegen das Eindringen von Festkörpern, Staub und Feuchtigkeit geschützt ist.
