Ensuring Water Resistance for Solar Cables: What Does AD8 Mean?

Water exposure to solar cables

November, 2024

We often get asked what AD8 protection signifies for our solar cables. Here's the short answer: All our solar cables are classified as AD8 (submersion) according to DIN VDE 0100-510, ensuring their suitability even in the presence of water.

Key Testing Parameters (as per EN 50525-21 Annex E):

  • Voltage Test: 1 kV AC in water at 50°C for over 100 days – no interruptions
  • Insulation Tensile Strength: >7 N/mm² after 100 days in water at 50°C
  • Insulation Elongation at Break: >200% after 10 days in water at 50°C
  • Sheath Water Absorption: <40% after 100 days in water at 50°C
  • Insulation Resistance: At least 10¹¹ Ω·cm

These rigorous standards ensure our cables remain durable and safe, even in demanding conditions such as total submersion.
